The Lodge has five rooms of ensuite accommodation, each with their own personality. There are three rooms with queen beds and one with twin beds. The fifth room has a queen and a single bed. This room can sleep three for a small family or a group of three travellers. It is is also our most accessible room for people using wheelchairs or with limited mobility. All the rooms offer indoor/outdoor living, excellent beds with quality linen, original artwork and tea/coffee making facilities (including plungers) and ensuites with great showers. We offer free, fast wifi* for all your devices, but are unashamedly TV free! Experience an early morning quiet you have to hear to believe, while watching the mist rise on the harbour, or watch the spectacular night sky from your verandah. *Usually 20Mb/sec download 6Mb/sec upload
Guest access
In addition to your room you will have access to a guest lounge in a separate, kauri lined building that was originally the winery is New Zealand's first commercial vineyard. The lounge has with a well equipped kitchen for self catering, comfortable sitting area with small library, and indoor and outdoor dining spots.
Your Hosts
Reena and Dimitri took over the Lodge in October. Reena was born in Western Canada but has lived in New Zealand over 30 years. She is a fine art photogragher, a traveller, and a recovering government policy person. Dimitri is a Kiwi born and bred. (although his mother was Greek, hence his name). He used to fish commercially, has established orchards, and plays the double bass. Most of the time we are available to answer questions, advise on itineraries or attractions and do whatever we need to maintain guests accommodation satisfaction.
Kohukohu overview
Kohukohu is located in New Zealand's iconic Hokianga, known for its spectacular scenery, deep Maori roots, and its musicians, artists and activists. KohukohuI is a friendly, tight knit and picturesque community with three art galleries, a cafe, pub, takeaway and general store. There is a historic walk of the village and some great photographic opportunities. From the Lodge your can take day trips to Cape Reinga or the Bay of Islands, visit giant Kauris, photograph historic churches, seek out the Hokianga beaches and sand dunes, and more.
Getting around
Getting around the small village of Kohukohu is a delight! A maximum 10 minute leisurely walk through streets lined with lush skubtropical vegetation, picturesque houses and gardens, then you'll be in the "CBD" here you can enjoy the art galleries, cafe, restaurant, library, wharf, store and whatever is happening in our vibrant community. You will need a car to get to Kohukohu and can come by ferry from Rawene, or overland from Kaitia or Kerikeri. NOTE: The car ferry to/from Rawene leaves Rawene on the half hour and Kohukohu on the hour. It runs from aprox 7:30 am till 8pm. Petrol is not available in Kohukohu but is in Rawene.
Other things to note
Local hours are early, especially in the quieter seasons when you will need to be prepared to eat out earlier rather than later. Thursdays are currently roast nights at the local pub. We go often!
A separate historic kauri building which was the first commercial winery in New Zealand in 1880, is our guest lounge and kitchen (with links to the site’s winemaking past) provides well equipped cooking facilities, sitting area (with small library), a wood-burning stove, and indoor/outdoor dining spaces.
The Lodge is situated on 2 acres on the edge of Kohukohu village. The grounds are surrounded by a mature flax border, and include a mix of lawn, large specimen trees and a simple coastal feel, with ever-changing harbour views. The property attracts abundant native birdlife, including Tuis, Herons, Wood Pigeons, Fantails, Shining Cuckoos and shore birds.
It is a one minute drive or short, leisurely walk (10 minutes or less) to the village centre, with its café, general store, art galleries, and pub.

- central heating to keep the rooms cozy in the cooler months
Our aim is to provide a simple but pleasant ambience. Artwork and other touches collected over the years by the owners individualize each room and the Guest Lounge.
The Lodge offers an excellent base for exploring Hokianga and NZ’s Far North, immersing yourself in Kohukohu village life, or just chilling out on the verandah or in a hammock under a tree. You can be as social or solitary as you like.
Our rooms are generally rented individually by travellers, although renting the entire Lodge is also popular for family gatherings or special events (sleeps 11 people).
